2024 Book Awards & Scholarship Application

The Westchester Alphas Educational Foundation Inc. takes great pride in recognizing the outstanding achievements of Black and Latino young men in Westchester County, NY. Each year, through fundraising efforts and the generosity of our community partners and supporters, WAEF, Inc. awards 2 one-time book awards in the amount of $1,000, one Frederick D. Patterson Book Award in the amount of $1,000, and the Gerald L. Barbour Scholarship in the amount of $2,000. They are provided to deserving Black and Latino young men who will graduate from high school in the spring, and who will be attending accredited two-year or four-year colleges/universities in the Fall of 2024. The book awards and scholarship funds are intended to provide some financial support as high school seniors make the transition into college. Award recipients exemplify the principles of WAEF, Inc.: academic excellence, community involvement, and cultural awareness.

To qualify for the WAEF, Inc. book awards and scholarship, applicants must:

● Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 80%, 3.2 (4.0 scale), or 4.0 (5.0 scale) for the book awards, and a minimum grade point average of 90%, 3.6 (4.0 scale), or 4.5 (5.0 scale) for the Gerald L. Barbour Scholarship;

● Be accepted to at least one (1) accredited two-year or four-year college or university for fall 2022;

● Demonstrate leadership in and a commitment to his community;

● Complete and submit the application and the supporting documentation: official transcript, three (3) secured letters of recommendation, an SAT/ACT exam score report, and the release form.

The completed application package (including supporting documentation) must be submitted online or postmarked no later than Saturday, April 6, 2024. Paper applications and supporting documentation - official transcript, three (3) letters of recommendation, and SAT/ACT exam score report (if taken),  should be mailed to:

Qualified applicants will be contacted by the WAEF Scholarship Committee to schedule an interview. Interviews will be held in the evening, during the week of April 14, 2024. Award recipients will be notified by Monday, April 29, 2024. The Westchester Alphas Educational Foundation and the Eta Zeta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated will host an event to honor the book award and scholarship recipients. Recipients are required to attend the event. Additional event information will follow.
